There are more than 70 different cat breeds depending on what standards and metric you chose to use.  The following are some of the most popular:


The Persian

The Persian is a long-haired and round-faced cat that is very popular in the UK. They first appeared in Iran (then called Persia) back in the 17th century. They come in a number of different variants including Himalayan, Exotic Shorthair and Chinchilla Longhair.

The Maine Coon

The Maine Coon is the largest cat breed and they can with up to 12 kgs! They are the first cat breed with a heritage in the United States with its main attributes being curious and easy to teach things, including swimming and opening doors.

The Siamese

The Siamese cat breed is one of the first cats with an Asian heritage, originally coming from a small province called Ayutthaya in Thailand. It is nowdays one of the most popular breeds in North America and Europe. They are well known for their almond shaped eyes, the triangular heads and their large ears.

The Birman

Birman or the The Sacred Cat of Burma has a really unknown background. Some people claims that they are a cross between other breeds but no one is really sure. They originally come from the southeast of Asia but came to Europe already in the beginning of the 20th century. Being considered one of the most beautiful cat breeds, the Birman distinguish from other cats with their silky coat, white gloves and beautiful blue eyes.


The Ragdoll

The Ragdoll cat breed appeared in the UK in the 1960s and has ever since become one of the most common breeds of the British islands. With their silky coat and their muscularity, they do have similarities to the Birman cats. They are sometimes being called a “dog-like”-cat due to their appearance.
